If you are concerned about spreading disease from a tree you've had removed to other plants, we recommend the following approach. Let the mulch age and compost for as much as a year before turning the pile and drying out the mulch for a few days. The heat from composting helps kill pathogens, and drying out helps kill moulds.

If you need mulch straight away or don't want to look at a pile of composting wood chips for 6 months, then just spread the mulch on the soil surface without incorporating it into the root zone or coming into contact with the trunk/stem.
