Why remove a stump?

Tree stumps can get in the way of development or landscaping, they may pose trip hazards, and they may start putting out new shoots continually. Some people consider them eyesores, and they may harbour fungi or pests that can spread to nearby trees.

The stump you see above ground is not the whole picture; there is a large mass of wood below ground in the base of the trunk and large spreading roots. You may wish to leave these to rot away naturally, but be aware this will cause soft, sunken areas which wouldn't work in the middle of a lawn, say. Also, if the tree was alive when it was felled, the roots may continue to live, sending up suckering growth around the stump and causing unwanted pruning chores.

Stump grinding removes the wood below ground level, effectively cutting off the roots which then die and rot away. You can choose to fill in the stump hole with the wood chips and allow them to rot, or fill the hole with clean soil and use the chips as mulch.

FAQ

The cutting teeth of the stump grinder's saw chew through the stump wood, creating wood chips. The operator passes the stump grinder over the whole area of the stump to well below ground level, killing the tree.
